دریائے چناب کے کنارے واقع چنیوٹ کا شہر ہمیشہ سے لکڑی کے کام کی وجہ سے مشہور رہا ہے۔ محّرم میں نکالے جانے والے تعزیے ہوں، عمارات کے دروازے اور کھڑکیاں یا فرنیچر، یہاں کے ہنرمندوں نے ہمیشہ اپنا لوہا منوایا ہے۔
وقت گزرنے کے ساتھ ساتھ چنیوٹ کے لکڑی کے کام کی شہرت اندرون ملک اور بیرون ملک پھیل چکی ہے۔
چنیوٹ میں فرنیچر کے تاجر اور فرنیچر بنانے والے کہتے ہیں کہ جتنی اچھی صورتحال اب ہے شاید اس سے پہلے کبھی نہ رہی ہو۔ چنیوٹ میں فرنیچر کے ایک شو روم کے مالک شیخ انیس جاوید کا کہنا ہے کہ برآمدات کی وجہ سے چنیوٹ کی سالانہ آمدن دس ملین ڈالر تک پہنچ چکی ہے۔
انہوں نے کہا کہ یہ اس سے زیادہ بھی ہو سکتی ہے لیکن یہاں لوگ اندرون ملک سے مانگ پوری کرنے میں اتنے مصروف ہیں کہ انہیں باہر کا دھیان ہی نہیں۔

شیخ انیس نے بتایا کہ انہوں نے شہر میں پہلا شو روم بنایا تھا اور اب شہر میں یہ رجحان بڑھ چکا ہے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ چنیوٹ ایک ایسا شہر جس میں کوئی بیروزگار نہیں۔ انہوں نے بتایا کہ شہر میں تین سے چار ہزار یونٹ کام کر رہے ہیں۔
ایک چھوٹی ورکشاپ چلانے والے زیب سیال نے بتایا کہ چنیوٹ میں روزانہ چھ ہزار فٹ لکڑی استعمال ہوتی ہے جبکہ کبھی پورے مہینے میں اتنی لکڑی استعمال نہیں ہوتی تھی۔
زیب سیال نے بتایا کہ اگر ہر یونٹ میں اوسطاً دس مزدور کام کرتے ہیں تو شہر میں پچاس ہزار کے لگ بھگ افراد لکڑی کے کام سے روزی کماتے ہیں۔
چنیوٹ ایک ایسا شہر ہے جس میں کوئی بیروزگار نہیں۔
زیب سیال کا کہنا تھا کہ جو صوفہ وہ بارہ ہزار میں بناتے اس کی قیمت کراچی پہنچنے تک ایک لاکھ ہو جاتی ہے۔ انہوں نے بھی کاروبار میں تیزی کا ذکر کیا۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ جب بھی فوجی حکومت آتی ہے فرنیچر کی مانگ میں اضافہ ہو جاتا ہے۔
چنیوٹ کے ایک اورایکسپورٹر نے بتایا کہ اس چار پانچ لاکھ کی آبادی والے شہر میں تقریباً ایک چوتھائی لوگ کسی نہ کسی طرح لکڑی کے کام سے وابستہ ہیں۔
